Creative Commons--
It has come to the attention of the Four that the focus of the Design Matters club may have shifted just a touch too much towards production and school-related happenings only. Our interest in these things is by no means a BAD thing, but after talking about it-- we want to reincorporate some of the more lighthearted aspects of the club.
For many of us, there is a lifetime ahead of contracts and professional projects, so we want to bring some more fun to the club, to give our beloved community something different to do. We really do have a great group between us at DM, and although it may appear dwarf in comparison to other student run organizations at AASU, we have to remember that we've already accomplished a great deal and grown together through Design Matters.
SO, in an effort to inject a small dose of creativity beyond what we have already demonstrated in our projects, I suggested that we have some small little creative one-offs, not unlike what Mrs. Horne has had us do in some of her various classes.
In essence, they will be similar to what we attempted during the previous summer, but I know everyone is up to their eyeballs in work, and stuff for school and this and that. (At least, I know I feel that way most days now.) so, I want to bring attention to one crucial difference...
There will be no concrete deadlines for these exercises. These are merely for fun and to share with one another. Don't feel obligated to do them at all, especially if you're swamped with stuff to do for school, work or family. But if you've got some free time on a weekend, and feel like flexing your design muscle... well, that's what this is here for.
As they come in, I or someone else with blog access will post them up in appropriately titled entries, which I'm hoping will also help bring more traffic and activity to the blog.
*deep breath*
That being said, here's the first one.
A while back, Mrs. Horne has us make some posters for Typography. We were to take a phrase from a book, a movie, TV show or song, and convert it into a poster, using only text.
Here's what I got then (those of you in the know will recognize this perfectly written line from one of my favorite movies EVER, Ghostbusters.)--

Here's the challenge-- pretty much do the same thing, but to loosen the requirements a bit, feel free to use some visuals. Your entry need not be 100% text as mine was.
Remember, this is just for fun!
SO GO HAVE FUN!
Email your submissions to DesignMattersAASU@gmail.com and we'll put them up accordingly!
Take care everyone!

February 16th Meeting
Whew! We had a load of stuff to cover this meeting. Big ups to everyone showing up or contacting me prior to the meeting. Great job! ^_^
Beyond the few poster comps we discussed, One Life Campus Outreach has unfortunately decided to stick with their original logo after all (frown.) We decided, and Ms. Campbell agrees, that we should move onto the church's website. There'll be more info presented later after Ms. Campbell gets in touch with her pastor.
Open House is this Saturday at 9:00 am.....annnnnnd everybody beyond Sam has to work! I mean-wowwwwww. Don't worry Mr. V-P, if push comes to shove, I'll use my own vacation time to give you a hand ^_^.
The Big One is just around the corner: AASU Outdoors Arts Festival will be here on March 28. We had a VERY successful debut, probably getting the most $ out of any club there! Here's to another great one.
Some ideas we threw out for more success was putting a little more attention to the interior of the greeting cards. A lot of people loved the exteriors, but immediately put the cards down when there wasn't anything inside.
Jenni suggested we find a way to make temporary tatoos. Dat'd be cool.
We're gonna see if we can get the popcorn machine again this year. It did us a world of good last year! And cotton candy anyone? Mrs. Horne suggested we look and see how much it would be to rent one out at a party place.
Who loves popsicles? You do? I do? We ALL do! Unfortunately, we can't use the freezer in the conference room, but Chris did have a good idea and suggested we use dry ice. That might just work...
Mounted work has been an issue when it comes to...gravity. We might want to avoid putting our stuff on black mounts because it's just too heavy...as hard as that's to believe. Chris suggested we just use sum good ole fancy tacks, and I think it would be a good idea to use matte paper for the sake of maintaining some sterdiness.
Our original DM poster is getting retired....awwwwwe, but wait. There's hope! Sam has agreed to print us out a new one! Hurrrrah! ^_^
Jenni needs some help with her independant study project. Lets give our fellow member a hand, eh!? ^_^ Check out the drop boks area and drop items in the folder titled "4 Jenni"....ugh....er...for Jenni, k? ^_^
Tee-shirts...nuff said, but more will be discussed.
We're goin mobile next meeting! Remember, we decided to go to Godfather's. The time will be usual. If anyone needs a ride, just lemme know.
That about covers it. If anything else comes up, we'll be sure to update everyone on the news. If you have any questions, you know how to reach your leads ^_^. Thanks folks! Till then, Happy designing! ^_^

February 2nd Meeting
G'day folks. Subjects that got covered yesterday included the following:
Mrs. Horne has given the Four the charge to reinforcing the attendance policy, which states only two unexcused absences are allowed. Not wanting to show up or forgetting is not considered excusable.....ahem- So PLEASE, PLEASE, if you can't make it to a meeting let one of the Four know. Otherwise, try your best to make it to the meetings....PLEASE! I hate having to approach members and giving them a warning because they aren't attending! Hate it! Hate-IT!!!! Don't make me have to do it! ....kay? ^_^
Every member is going to get to make his/ her own poster and flier to advertise DM. It'll be a great way to make sure every member gets at least one of his/ her works shown throughout the campus. Expect an e-mail giving the requirements soon. I'm thinkin this will be a fun one! ^_^
We thought of some places to meet beyond campus. We wanted the places to be relatively close to the campus, and that didn't have a huge crowd. The ideas that came to mind were Starbucks, outside the cafeteria, and Godfathers. If anyone else has anymore suggestions, let us know what's on your mind.
AASU is having an Open House on February 21st. Clubs are going to be having booths up similar to the ones held at the Block Party. We're looking for 3-4 volunteers to man....ahem...or woman the booth ^_^. Gimme an e-mail if you'd be interested.
Alex gave a great suggestion when the Four met on Saturday. We should have movie nights! Mrs. Horne thought this was a great idea. We were hoping to make this a full-sized campus event and use the AMT Theater, but she explained we can't use the theater and calling for such a sized event might require some bucks on our end. So She suggested we try to keep the movie nights within the organization and host them at members homes, at least for a start. Rest assured, we'll be talking about this much more.
Mrs. Campbell wasn't able to meet with her group last Tuesday in concerns to the One Life Outreach logo, but she said they would meet this Tues...oh....uhhhh...today ^_^. I'll let you folks know when I hear something from her.
You should already know this by now, but all members got a forward of our drop boks (I know, "box") account. ID and password were included. So, from here on out, be sure to send your comps and finals to that, kayyyy? If you didn't get the e-mail, just lemme know ^_^.
A few of us will be meeting tomorrow (Feb. 4) to have lunch. We'll be going over the things discussed yesterday again just in case anyone had any questions. We'll meet up at Solms 102 b at 12:00 and head on out afterwards. This isn't a required, but optional meeting. If you missed Monday's meeting, I would STRONGLY encourage you to join us....besides, who hates food!?
We, the Four, promise to use the blog more often to keep everyone posted. If you need to see what's on the current agenda, be sure to check this area out. But if you got any questions, you're always free to email us. Thanks everyone. Look forward to our next meeting! Till then, happy designing!

January 26th Meeting
Hello peoples! Here's what we discussed this lat meeting:
Ms. Campbell sat in at the beginning of the meeting to see what comps we had for her One Life Campus Outreach organization. She was very pleased and excited about what was presented, and she will have a final decision in concerns to their logo by the end of the week.
We have a standard drop box set up thanks to Chris. More information as to how it will be accessible will be brought up at next week's meeting. Still, shouldn't be dat hard, right?
We discussed what the meaning and right to the "attendance exception" rule was. Is it fair to have a member sit to the side for a semester because of time complications such as work even when membership fees for the year have been paid? On the other hand, what are the responsibilities of an "excused member" if he/she cannot attend meetings?
Next week (Feb 2nd), we'll discuss the AASU Open house event, and will probably be getting more in depth with the One Life Outreach project. We'll also brainstorm about some places we can meet beyond the lab ancd campus. Oh yeah! And I think I gotta fun side project we'll all probably wanna tackle (grin).
I noticed participation in the Outreach project was very slim this week. I understand we're all very busy with our families, jobs, school work, graduation planning, etc, but we all should do our best to help DM spread its wings. Being an active member in Design Matters goes beyond just attending the meetings and sitting in. We're trying to develop skills that'll help us outside the classroom, ya know? PLEASE, lets all try to put on those creative thinkin juices outside of the mac lab and have sum fun, k? I KNOW we can do it! ^_^. C yaz next week!

Solid Logos
So, I saw this the other day, as I was perusing the interwebs... and I figured since a pretty solid majority of us in his group are either IN Logotype, HAVE TAKEN Logotype, or have an INTEREST in making corporate identity packages as a graphic designer...
...that this would be a good article to post here on the blog, so everyone can appreciate it.
It's an appreciation of 30 separate vector-based logos. Each logo comes with some small discussion on each logo's finer points, or a brief explanation of how it relates to the theme or spirit of the individual/organization it represents.
Enjoy; hopefully this will give you some ideas as to the design sensibility we're all capable of, or inspire you in some way. Leave a comment, tell us what you think!
